NUTRITION EXPERT CORNER | SCHOOL MENU INSIGHTS

Our guest expert this week, Ms. Valeria Herrera, Certified Nutritionist, joins The Caterers to share her insights through two key questions. Let’s discover how thoughtful menu planning can create meals that are not only delicious but also help children develop healthy eating habits from an early age.

In your opinion, what is the most important factor when developing a menu for schools?

The most important factor is recognizing that healthy habits are formed from early childhood. Every meal we serve is an opportunity to teach children that food is like natural medicine: it nourishes, protects, and supports their development. That is why I always prioritize using natural, whole ingredients, a variety of colors, and ensuring nutritional balance. When children learn from an early age to enjoy natural, nutritious foods, we are helping to build a strong foundation for their long-term health and well-being.

How does The Caterers approach creating healthy menus for students?

Menus are designed to meet nutritional guidelines as well as students’ preferences; we focus on balance, use fresh ingredients, and minimize processed foods as much as possible. The goal is to reduce sugar while increasing fiber, phytonutrients (from a wide variety of colorful foods), and healthy fats. Every dish is carefully tested for both taste and nutritional value, because healthy food should be delicious—not a compromise on quality or the dining experience.

A sincere thank you to Ms. Valeria Herrera for sharing such valuable insights into creating healthy, balanced, and development-focused school menus.
